Raymond Jones

On January 26, 2026, Raymond Earl Jones enter eternal rest at Walter Reed Convalescent Center. He was born May 2, 1936 to the late Alice E. Jones Morgan of Mathews, Virginia and the late Harry H. Gwynn of Mathews, Virginia.

Raymond accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and became a member of First Baptist Church, Mathews, VA. He was educated in Mathews County Public Schools. He met the love of his life Annie Hudgins through their siblings and was married for 65 years. From this union they had five girls. Raymond was employed with Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. for forty years, working his way up to supervisor of the X88 Northside Steel Storage Department until he retired. For many years he was an active member of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia until he became ill.

He loved to fish, garden and travel. Most of all he loved being a family man. He adored all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, as they affectionately called him Papa and Papa Bear.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice E. Jones Morgan and his father, Harry H. Gwynn; his loving wife, Anne M.H. Jones; brother, Sherman Jones; half brother, Harry R. Gwynn and sister Mary L. Jones Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory, five daughters, Sarah Brown (Leon) of Chester, VA; Valorie Brown (William) of Hayes, VA, Randy Apple (Herbert) of Newport News, VA; Olive Thomas of Newport News, VA and Kathy Jones of Hayes, VA; four grandson: Sean Brown (Shantina), William Brown Jr. (Shekila), Dravon Tillary, Cameron Banks; four granddaughters, Teya Brown Green (Kevin), Candice Farthing (Darius), Brittany Banks and Dayla Dupree; nine great grandchildren: Kellin Green, Kaleb Green, Jacob Brown, Jonah Brown, Joel Brown, Zaidyn Farthing, Devyn Farthing, Nyla Dupree, William Brown III and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2026 at First Baptist Church, Mathews. Interment in Windsor Gardens Cemetery, Dutton. The viewing will be the hour prior to the service.
