Mary Lynch

Mary Catherine Lynch, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved caregivers after seeing her family and friends on July 26, 2025. Born on April 16, 1954, in Mathews, Virginia to Roland and Dora Foster, Mary's life was filled with adventure, laughter, resilience and abundance of love.

From an early age, Mary made her mark on the world. She was proud of her high school athletic career, excelling on the basketball court as the only African American girl on the team. Her athleticism and determination earned her the prestigious Presidential Physical Fitness Award, and she found joy playing softball as well. Her competitive spirit and strength shone through in everything she did.

After high school, Mary married and embarked on a life of travel and discovery. She lived in Germany, visited England and explored numerous countries around the world before eventually settling back in the United States. One of the greatest joys of her life came in 1981 when she gave birth to her daughter, Ebony Dominique Lynch, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mary's journey brought her through Kentucky, Colorado and eventually back home to Virginia. She worked alongside her mother and aunts at the Crab Factory and later built a 16 year career at International Papers; retiring in 2016. No matter where she went or what she did, Mary always carried with her a sense of pride, strength and vibrant spirit that was impossible to ignore.

Known for her infectious laugh and larger-than-life personality, Mary truly lived life to the fullest. She was the heart of every gathering- quick to crack a joke, make a funny face or dream up a spontaneous plan that would leave everyone in stitches. Her sense of humor was unmatched and her ability to bring joy to others was a gift she gave freely and often.

Mary shared a deep and special bond with her daughter, Ebony. Their love for each other was evident to anyone who knew them. In March 2025, Mary moved into a new home in Hartfield, Virginia with Ebony and her granddaughters, Joann and Lillian. She often said she never imagined living in a home like that- surrounded by love, laughter and family. It was a pace of peace and joy for her final chapter.

She also spent many cherished years living with her sister, Ann, and nephew, Roland John, who were by her side through thick and thin. Even in her final days, Mary's playful spirit shone through- still joking, still scheming for one last great escape with her siblings.

Mary's legacy is one of love, strength, spontaneity and boundless joy. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her- in every shared laugh, in every silly moment and in the deep and enduring love she gave so freely.

She is survived by her daughter, Ebony; granddaughters, Joann and Lillian; sister, Doris Foster-Curseen; brothers, Roland L. Foster and Nelson A. Foster (Barbara) along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many more family members and friends who will miss her deeply but carry her light with them always.

Mary Catherine Lynch was one of a kind. And while no one can ever replace her, we will feel her spirit - wild, warm and wonderful - with us every single day.

Rest in peace, Mary. You were truly unforgettable.

The memorial service, where her sister Ann will also be remembered, will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2025 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the cancer center in Gloucester or the CHAMPS program at Rappahannock Community College for Ebony in honor of Mary.
