Henry Byrd Obituary

On Monday, April 24, 2023 Henry Hudson Byrd was called from labor to reward. Henry was born July 24, 1954 to Deaconess Virgie Byrd and the late Deacon Kenneth H Byrd. He was the fourth of eight children.

Henry received his formal education at Second Mount Olive School and Central High School. He was a proud graduate of the Class of 1973 where he was the class jokester. He was a member of the football team where he played many positions including offensive guard and defensive tackle. He also played on special teams (kicking and receiving). He was a member of the Central High School marching band under the direction of John H. Lee where he was a tubist.

At an early age, Henry accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a member of the junior usher ministry and the young adult choir. He enjoyed attending Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

In 1973, Henry enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany where he met Karin Meyers. In 1976 he was honorably discharged as a Sp4. In 1980 Henry and Karin were joined together in Holy Matrimony. The proudest moment was when he became a father of his daughter Stephanie and his son Christopher. They were his pride and joy. He enjoyed sports and was a fan of the Washington Commanders (Redskins).

Henry was a determined individual in continuing his education at Thomas Nelson Community College where he received his Associate Degree in Broadcast Communication. He loved his music, he utilized his talents as a DJ. In 1982 Henry and his family moved back to Germany. He would return home every August for Homecoming. Henry had two dedicated friends who would come by and visit Gene A. Jones Jr. and the late Tom Harris.

Henry leaves to cherish his precious memory his wife Karin; his daughter Stephanie; his son Christopher; his grandson Louis; his devoted mother Deaconess Virgie Byrd; his siblings Kenneth R. Byrd (Cordice), Sylvia Colston (Johnnie), C. Diane Holmes, Charlotte Goodman, Minister Freddie Byrd (Minister Victoria), Bonnie McDonald (Larry) and Vanessa Byrd-Dabney a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the Second Mount Olive Baptist Church, Little Plymouth. Interment in the church cemetery. The viewing will be 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2023 at the funeral home.

Henry will always be remembered by his family and friends as being a fun loving person always making those around him laugh and feel loved. Henry's favorite quote was, "I Want Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself Again."
