Helen Walker

Helen Walker, daughter of the late George Edward and Lucy Taylor Walker, was born on January 4, 1943 in Gloucester County, Virginia. 

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Union Prospect Baptist Church, now The First United Baptist Church of Gloucester, where she remained a member throughout her life. During her more than thirty years as a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Washington D.C. She faithfully served as secretary and assistant secretary of the Senior Usher Board.

After graduating from Thomas C. Walker High School, Helen moved to Harlem, New York. She later relocated to Washington D.C. where she attended Cortez Peters Business College. In 1972, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work from the University of the District of Columbia. She continued her academic pursuits and, in 1976, received a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Maryland College Park.

In 1962, Helen married Willie Boyd, this union later ended in divorce.

Helen retired from the Library of Congress in 1993 after thirty years of dedicated service. Throughout her tenure, she received numerous meritorious commendations recognizing her commitment and exceptional performance. Following her retirement, she volunteered at Children's Medical Hospital, where she was later employed. She also served as a reference librarian at Howard University for seven years.

Helen was an avid traveler who explored Europe, Egypt, the Caribbean, Canada, British Columbia and many destination across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She enjoyed tennis, bridge and pinochle. Among her favorite pastimes were working crossword puzzles and gardening. She embraced life fully and cherished her years living in Washington D.C.

Helen will be remembered as a faithful and devoted sister, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her beloved siblings, William Edward Walker and Mary Pryor.

She leaves to celebrate her life one brother, George Walker Jr.; four sisters, Gladys Smith and Brenda Bryant of Gloucester, Dorothy Pope of Hampton and Ernestine McIntosh of Harlem, New York along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2026 at The First United Baptist Church, Gloucester. Interment in the church cemetery. The viewing will be one hour prior to the service.
