Carolyn Brooks Obituary

Carolyn Jean Brooks departed this life on Friday, March 8, 2024 in Richmond, Virginia surrounded by family. She was 75 years old and lived a life rich in moments that touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

Born on September 17, 1948, in West Point, Virginia, to the late James R. Johnson and Florence B. Johnson, she was the fourth of five siblings. Jean grew from a spirited child into a caring adult whose life was a testament to the values instilled in her at an early age.

As a young adult, she moved to Newark, New Jersey where she met and married her husband, Charles Brooks in September of 1982. Not having any children of her own, she became a maternal figure to her step children and grandchildren. She was a second mother to her nieces and nephews and was always labeled the "cool aunt".

Jean was a devout Christian and member of New Salem Baptist Church where she served in several capacities. Whether it was hitting her lovely soprano in the choir, serving on the Deacon board or participating in outreach, she took her smile and the joy of the Lord everywhere she went.

She retired from Bell Atlantic (Verizon) in 2001 after 35 years of service. But, retirement did not stop her from getting out. She loved to visit the bowling alley weekly with her husband where she fellowshipped with those in his bowling league. She cherished the time spent with family and friends therefore making frequent trips back to Virginia to visit and spend time with family.

When Carolyn became ill, she never lost sight of who God was in her life. She was a prayer warrior until the very end and never lost her faith. She will be remembered as a God fearing and loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, auntie and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James R. and Florence B. Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory her husband, Charles Brooks; one sister, Barbara J. Pryor of West Point, Virginia; three brothers, James A. Johnson (Mary) of West Point, Virginia, Milton Johnson (Mariana) of Richmond, Virginia, Richard Johnson (Theressa) of Hampton, Virginia; mother-in-law, Georgianna Brooks of Newark, New Jersey and a host of stepchildren and grandchildren, nieces, nephews cousins and friends.

The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, West Point. Interment in Sunny Slope Cemetery, West Point. The viewing will be one hour prior to the service.
